>WORKSHOP STRUCTURE:

01      AIM
The design studio will focus on the exploration of the vast urban landscape of Madrid's south-eastern periphery.

The burst of the Spanish speculative bubble in 2008 ended the rapid development this area was undergoing in the recent years. It contains on of the most ambitious urban development areas of the Spanish capital, the PAU of Vallecas. The AVE High-Speed Railway crosses the study area as well a several highways which form part of Madrid's metropolitan circumferential motorway system. The urban landscape of Madrid's southeastern outskirts is currently a patchwork of residential clusters, illegal settlements, industrial developments and abandoned agricultural lands. The area further includes Madrid's central waste disposal site.

The students are asked to envision different futures for the urban landscape and terrain vague of the study area, develop overall strategies and one site-specific proposal. Working groups will be formed within the three different subject areas:

    > infrastructures
    > landscape of crisis
    > residual landscape

02     THEORY
As a previous step to the workshop a substantial theoretical viewpoint is elaborated on the issue of “Zwischenstadt”, urban voids and the characteristics of peripheral urban landscape as well as reflections on new urban developments and their open space system within the context of landscape urbanism and the development of the European city.

(previous work done in Viena: collaborations in groups of 2) – poster

03      EXCURSIONS / LANDSCAPE STROLLS
The first step consists in collecting data and impressions on-site through excursions, mappings, dérives and processing the information obtained.

(specific excursion for each working area: infrastructure / landscape of crisis / residual landscape)

04      LECTURES
An introduction to the study area will be given in Madrid and short lectures held by local experts will provide background information on the study area:
